Re: Light Infantry

Light Infantry are in all other respects Infantry, but they also have the ability to prevent pursuit damage, much the same as cavalry, if not exactly the same as cavalry.

Re: National moral from battles

@Captain_Orso Casualties in the West were about 11.5k Union vs 8k Rebel. But I lost a general, does that matter? In the East it was 6k Union to 2.3k Rebel casualties. Just as comparison I lost a region with a garrison inside a city of which 2 elements were killed and 2 more almost wiped out with ab...

I think element loss is observed. Unit loss would be very ambivalent, because a unit could be a single militia unit or one of those massive 7 element VA units.

"Why a Marine?" Grant's stack is set to Red/Red and Enter the Structure. So they exit the ships and then immediately assault the fort in the same turn. I thought that qualified as an amphibious assault. ummm  .... maybe?!? IIRC the Amphibious Invasion penalty is, the defender ge...

The turn Grant shows up, rail him to Annapolis to be stack commander of a Division containing a Marine and commanded by someone else that you want promoted. Take Fort Clark on the NC coast in an amphibious assault. This has always got me Grant promoted with seniority enough to command one of the Ar...

The game has no concept of you hot-seating. All it sees is that it has orders for all the major nations and creates orders for the minor nations and other entities.

Re: Suicide of Bad Generals

Of course to all of those, but those pesky varmints still block promotions. Sometimes you just have to consider taking the hit, as bad as it is. A few patches ago, it was easy enough to simply give Grant and another Maj.Gen. Corps under Halleck, who was parked in St. Louis. Halleck was far enough aw...

Re: Suicide of Bad Generals

Siege doesn't require a fort, but it will likely last longest there. If a location is besieged and it has an unblocked harbor, it can still get supplies through the harbor, and will not likely surrender. As long as every besieged unit has supplies, there is a 90% chance they will not surrender, rega...

Re: Some rule/mechanics questions from early play.

I hope you can help me with some questions I have: 1. If using the auto-replacement option, can you also add replacements yourself? I'm taking a lot of hits and the computer seems to be replacing very few hits, far less than the 1/20 for line infantry even though I have available resources. Is the ...

Re: Suicide of Bad Generals

No. What's a siege. I just described in detail when a siege exists. In Siege Combat, very basically, the offensive artillery value of the besieging forces is compared to the defensive artillery value of the besieged forces. The better the offensive value vs defensive value, the more likely to score...

Re: Suicide of Bad Generals

You do know what constitutes a siege, right? Anytime your force is inside a location (fort, stockade, city, etc) without any friendly good-order (not in PP) forces outside the location but in the region in which the location is located, and with good-order enemy forces in the region, the forces insi...

Re: Blocking river crossing

I've never seen anything like this. If one side loses a naval battle, it is changed to PP. put in a neighboring region, nearly always the one from which it came, often into harbor if there is one accessible, where it remains the rest of the turn. I would have to see the save to be able to repeat the...

They could be killed, but it's very unlikely; only a 2 or 3% chance. They cannot be captured in open combat. They will be wounded if their unit is destroyed and immediately be moved to the closest (in movement costs (rail, river and naval included(1)) friendly city, where they will be locked for a n...

Re: Blocking river crossing

Captain Orso, I labeled my post a hunch. http://www.ageod.net/agewiki/index.php?title=Bombard_and_Blockade&action=edit It also pertains to artillery on ships bombarding land targets, which would seem to me to be the same as artillery on ships bombarding, well, other ships. The Blockade Squadron...

Re: Blocking river crossing

You lost the naval battle. The winning fleet continued on it way. How can you lose a naval battle when one side had 5 gunboats and the other side has just transports carrying a brigade? I think I did lose this as my fleet was in defensive posture at the next turn. But if lost it was that my fleet g...

Re: Transport ships transported 20 supply points oversea?

Hi clairobscur, what patch level are you on? The latest is 1.06.1, but AFAIK the only substantial thing that patch brought was a graphics display change, which many have rated poorly, so maybe 1.06 would be the best. The general rule is, if you have transport capacity in the Shipping Lanes, it will ...

Re: Promotions Can They Change Stats or Traits?

Random stats on leaders is simply crap. I tried it once, but never again. A 0-0-6 leader, or a 6-0-0 leader (I saw both, IIRC) are just ridiculous. Aside from how ludicrous the results are, it can easily make the game completely unplayable thru random luck. Imagine the Union gets McDowell as 6-5-5 a...

Yeah, mostly. The plans are also not massive influences. The devs didn't want to add something that would cause huge changes in battles, but they do help if they are successful.

I'm still not sure if that works, if the batteries are all in the same region. I believe, if they are in different region, they each fight their own bombardment.

Re: Blocking river crossing

If true that a stack can only inflict 50 max hit points of damage then it would make more sense to create two or three smaller groups than to combine into one large stack. Of course this can put you at a disadvantage in a pure ship to ship fight. At the furthest forward river region you are guardin...

Re: Blocking river crossing

I've had gunboats on orange/orange and they didn't block the other side from moving past using transport. I'm not referring to moving from one land region across the river to another but instead pure naval transport on the river. Combat did take place but the surviving units still proceeded to move...

Only if the naval combat elements are in OP, will the movement be blocked and possible combat will ensue. Otherwise,...

Re: Promotions Can They Change Stats or Traits?

Promotions were not a given in that era. You didn't get promoted, because you had been at your rank for so-n-so long and did your schooling and training, so they gave you a promotion. People were promoted to fulfill the requirements of a position. Often they were simply brevetted; that is, they got ...

Re: Promotions Can They Change Stats or Traits?

That's very true, what you said, but most of the human-factor is not really fit into the game. While some (many?) commanders did raise to their level of incompetence--my best example is Burnside--some had 'break-downs', which might not have happened. I don't think one can validly say, Hooker was des...
