In my philosophy, a one star leader already represents any non-corps command eligible general, be he a colonel, brigadier or Confederate major general.

Polk as a 2 star leader has a seniority of 4.

Has the new patch changed promotable leaders to all those who's seniority is1,2,3 or 4? It used to be only 1 and 2.

There is another aspect of the retreats I'm not super happy with. That is how all retreats automatically force the retreating force into passive stance. Consider the following first two battles. http://www.ageod-forum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=8331&d=1246514929 In the first battle the CSA cava...

I can already see your AllowRetreat is different from mine. This is what I have for 1.13b ctlContested = 5 // Minimum control gained upon entering a region (if not passive) ctlAllowRetreat = 5 // Minimum control to have in a region to allow a retreat into it ctlRetreatAdjCity = 5 // Interest in retr...

I could not understand how I lost that second battle with Lee and Meade, but perhaps you have it right. If Lee was in passive stance, that would explain how Pemberton got beat up, despite my having more troops in the region. But again, this is another aspect of the retreats I'm not super happy with....

Thanks tag but by the time Memphis is besieged, there will be Union forces at Corinth or at least between Memphis and Corinth.

And no, they will not go there, because Corinth is two regions away and the retreat calculations only look at adjacent regions.

Yes I suspect ctlRetreatPrevSubSpaceCoeffH is already so large it is making the other considerations irrelevant. In the Charlottesville battle from my AAR with Manstein, Lee is in Albemarle, Marches to the guns for a battle in Charlottesville, returns to Albemarle after the battle, but then is force...

Okay. If you want to list the coefficients, we need to know the formula the game uses to choose the region. Otherwise we do not know how the coefficients are applied.

Also, is it possible to include a directional bias? For example, can you give a bias for the CSA to retreat south and the USA north?

One possible solution I have always advocated is to force fewer retreats altogether. If the battle is close, let the bias be for the armies to SHARE the region until the end of the turn without further combat. Put both armies in defensive stance until the end of the turn. This allows the players to ...

Besides, this is a strategic game, not a tactical game, and choosing how and where to retreat would be a tactical decision. I disagree. Lee clearly retreated after the battle of Gettysburg, but the direction of the retreat is crucial. Whether he moved the army north towards Harrisburg, PA or south ...

Perhaps the solution can be that a defeated force must be retreated one zone to the closest controlled depot independently who has the military control of that zone At first that seems like it would be better logic to use. Using the Memphis example though, a force at Memphis would still retreat wes...

Retreat

The retreat logic the game uses can be a real killer. If for example, the Confederates try to defend Memphis and lose, the computer retreats west across the Mississippi, where there is a level 1 structure (port), rather than south along the rail lines to Jackson, protecting the Confederate rear area...

My units were not blocked. The way was clear to the regions east of Charlottesville and Albemarle. As far as routs go, there was only one large scale rout during the entire Civil War, and that was at First Bull Run. Even that army retreated along its communications and back to it's capitol, not some...

Anyway, I think that a general cannot control all at a war, and if we are playing a role as president of USA/CSA, we cannot control the retreat way taken by our army commander. It places a interesting unexpectability and no control of our forces that make more realistic war situations. Unexpected, ...

Where to start? I got the defensive battle I wanted at Charlottesville, but the end result was a problem. In the battle, we destroyed 29 enemy elements, or the majority of a Union corps, inflicting about 14,000 more casualties than we took. However, the army would not stand their ground. Unfortunate...

Lee was forced back from Culpeper. This is unfortunate, but not unexpected. I am prepared to make a fighting withdrawl all the way to Richmond. It is clear that Manstein will move on Charlottesville next turn. To fight another defensive battle in the entrenchments there, I will shift the entire ANV ...

The plan is to send an army HQ to Johnston, then make Pemberton's force a corps under Johnston. Then these 4+ divisions will be able to cooperate, and by using the rail lines to shift rapidly, should be able to react together to any threat to either Wilmington or New Berne.

That was obviously a good battle for me. The entire Virginia army marched to the guns, and my Rappahannock line held. That is exactly what I want. Entrenched as he was, I was hoping for a better defensive showing from Johnston.

As shown, in Virginia, Longstreet's corps is already feeling the pinch from lack of supply, despite his position on a depot, and only two regions from Richmond.

Cohesion loss and patrol values are seperate issues. I currently believe the interception chances are ridiculously low. For example, my testing shows one cavalry unit chasing another that is evading only has a (approximately) 10% chance of initiating a battle. This is based on Patrol values and Evad...

For those interested, I have done a rework for the cavalry. Lensman would like some more testing and feedback before incorporating these changes into an official patch. This new file set increases cohesion loss for moving cavalry, and roughly doubles patrol values and interception chances for horse ...

Columbus might be a level 4 city, but it is worth 0 VPs. Only strategic cities are worth VPs. They are labeled with a slightly different color name.

I'm planning on increasing attrition loss for cavalry, but I don't know how much it will help. Even low cohesion cavalry can keep moving, and a cav unit with zero cohesion can still cut a rail line. All I can do is make raiding cavalry less combat effective.

How do you counter the effects of cavalry raids IMHO is the question. IMHO you cannot. Later in the game you will see I place cavalry patrols along every rail region, but often times the raiding cavalry just retreats to the next region, is not engaged before the end of the turn, and cuts that regio...

At this point, Jackon's division and a half, plus the brigade forming at Winchester, are by my count occupying the attention of 10 Union divisions. Not a fancy Valley Campaign to this point, but effective nontheless. However, I'm worried that Keys may move into Shenandoah, or that Jackson may be sur...
