Re: In the meantime, what do you play and why?

Just started playing Conquest of Elysium .. that is one exceptionally tricky 4x, you can get totally stomped at the start and it can all go very wrong even after you think you are well established

Re: Poll. Future of the AGE engine.

Hard to tell, when there is not a single new engine based game to compare with. ... AFAIK this is not quite true. The Archon game engine was (I think - may well be wrong) originally developed from the Battle Academy games and is used in Pike and Shot and Field of Glory2. Now clearly those are all t...

Re: Merchant ships

Don't forget that if another power puts one of its fleets off-shore you can trade using that. Playing Italy I made a lot of money selling China my surplus fish once I had a trade fleet there. In truth, China is not really very playable in PoN. Not least a lot of the later game carve up of your coast...

Amending PoN save files

There are times when this is easier than writing an event but its a bit daunting at first sight, especially if you don't know what you are looking for. Since I've just done this as a PM for someone, thought I'd share with all. The specific goal was to delete a naval unit that had picked up a post-19...

Re: Modernisation des flottes

thats ok - I'll answer in the same (and apologies to others) 1) I think its slow, its best if you have a lot of spare replacement chits 2) I fear is a bug, it has occured in the game before so it may have come back :bonk: The solution is not easy. You either need to write an event to eliminate the c...

Re: Port blockade

The key is that a long term blockade is an essentially passive operation with little immediate likelihood of a major action - ie the defensive stance models this and allows you to stay at sea for a long time but you are not ready for a major fleet action. You are basically expecting to stop merchant...

Re: Recruiting

How do I get privateers? Do I recruit them? Also I am playing as the English, what year will I expect to run out of steam for new units to recruit? if I recall, priviteers are something you can recruit by spending EPs. In the American Revolution scenarios, the British get massive reinforcements in ...

Re: Trade and Missions

I am currently in year 1857 and my is it hard to get ahead regarding prestige. I am on position 7 and France has an army 1.5 times as big as mine. My colonial empire is a joke, though I guess that's due to the missing options. Still, interesting game, though often I can only skip turns... I don't t...

Re: Port blockade

I am currently playing during the Crimean War and I'm blocking the Russian port of Sevastpol using the French and British fleets. What happens is that the cohesion is hit really hard after about a month, why is that so? IRL port blockades can last for months and in game the fleet's strength dropped...

Re: Trade and Missions

Without offering too many spoilers, you can unify without beating France but ... you'll only get Alsace and Lorraine as a reward for capturing Paris If you do this then you get the S German states automatically and the full set of colonial cards (in 1871-2). This also carries a large VP bonus - of t...

Re: Trade and Missions

Thanks again, Loki! The London Protocol already fired early 1852, so the event chain is still on track. Good, I do not like to start historical wars without an event. Do you know if it is possible to reach the "Greater Germany" unification via events? I currently have the option to start ...

Re: Trade and Missions

I have another question regarding events. As I am playing as Prussia, I wonder if the war for Schleswig-Holstein is resolved via events? I am in early 1852 now and nothing happened so far. Does anyone know, if I have to declare war myself to start the conflict or does it still happen? Historically ...

Re: Trade and Missions

To be honest the at start 'missions' don't really seem to work. I don't think I've ever met one of them so I'd just put that to one side. If you have the patience you can just about work out production of primary materials (to a point) but secondary industrial production is very hard (impossible?) t...

.... But reader engagement is so important. Just to pick up on this - apols if I wander off at a bit of a tangent. Its two way and reflects the underlying logic to the style of AARs. My feeling is that most AARs for AGEOD games derive from PBEMs. This has a few consequences. They tend to lag the ac...

Re: Playing as another country

Anyone? I'm not sure how to bring an AI nation to be playable. You could try using the ~ function, change faction and run a turn. Make a save for China. Go back to your old save, run the turn as GB with your usual save. That might mean the game is now looking for China saves to progress. You can al...

Re: The collaspe of AARs

It seems to me that after the dual blow of forum change and Photo Bucket yanking the free service rug from under our feet, AAR production has collapsed. Any ideas how this problem could be turned around? It certainly doesn't help that many of the BBCode features we used to have in the old forum sof...

Re: Playing as a mercantilist

Think there is a critical difference between a vs AI game and MP. In a vs AI game, if the player opts for mercantalism you will run into all sorts of problems. You creating and forcing international trade helps the AI - and really apart from the US, UK and Russia all the powers need the AI to have s...

Re: When to lay siege or when to assault

What goes into the decision making when figuring out to siege or assault? As you might suspect its complex. Remember that frontage plays an important role in combat so a large army cannot effectively be deployed to an assault. So a certain size of garrison will probably fight off any direct attack....

Re: Is the game still railroaded?

if you win, Germany doesn't form. Problem is its not just a simple decision keep the empire/lose the empire. It triggers a need for an essentially different what if chain for France. How stable is the Second Empire even after a win? The underlying social tensions remain and will resurface once the g...

Re: Is the game still railroaded?

There is a practical problem to doing branching events which is the event syntax does not support 'or' commands. You can get around this by creating formal descriptive events and using those as a future test or the tricky 'regedit' function but neither are easy (especially the latter). An example of...

1. Paradox didn't fail to hand over keys; they handed over all the data they had. Paradox separated from Gamersgate in about 2009. 2. Your install is persona suspecta because you are effectively part of the home team and also all the development work you have done (and kudos for that, and your AARs...

Sorry but don't agree that it can't be updated. To repeat, I use a GG bought version and updated with no problems. Do sympathise, as above, I got caught out over RUS-RuS Gold as the former was from GG and the same problem with Paradox failing to hand over a list of keys. Yes, Matrix are refusing to ...

I sympathise but the problem is not the patch/GG interaction.

Re: 1.04.5 not available for Gamersgate or Paradox PON owners

I'm not sure why this is such a problem. I can sympathise with matrix as they inherited a complete mess from Paradox. I missed out on the discounted way to buy RUS-gold as I had the original from GG and the same issue of non-verified keys arose. But my PoN is from GG. I updated to the latest patch w...

Austria Resurgent?

Austria Resurgent? http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/923/PH5vRb.jpg The infamous Roman riots of late 1857 led to a conflict that had engulfed much of Southern Europe by late 1858. Re: American Civil War Peace

I'm not sure. The war was very active, I was seeing the naval combat image during turn resolution and provinces change to Union control etc. So it really shouldn't have been the auto-white peace event. On the other hand, you as a player, can't make peace in the context of a Full war till the period ...
