Replacements -- Vol LXXXVI

Hi Folks, I know this has already been asked numerous times, but I'm sure I used to know the answer and now I can't remember. Is there any way of restricting replacements from joining specific units, i.e. static ones? I'm particularly interested in keeping my artillery replacements from being eaten ...

More agitation for a Peloponnesian War engine

After a bit of thought, I've decided that the best fit with the Peloponnesian War in terms of game mechanics would be the Dutch Revolt. Both conflicts had a strong naval element and were characterised by the relative strength of fortifications against assault. In each case, an ideological (or religi...

I've promised to provide sensor research for an open-source U-boat sim but have heard nothing back from them. I'll check back and if they still do not need my services I'll do some preliminary research on force strengths and finances. This is from Wikipedia on the Battle of Naupactus which occurred ...

While I'm unsure of the commercial attractiveness of the Peloponnesian war I can say any well-modeled game of this conflict would play brilliantly. I recently read Donald Kagan's book on the conflict, logically called The Peloponnesian War, and thoroughly enjoyed it. All the data needed to model the...

Very nice article! And great tips! It's a pleasure to read a game review by a reviewer that actually knows what he's writing about! :coeurs: Some "professional" reviewers don't spend more than 1 hour with a game (no matter how complex) before writing their "verdict" :( Cheers! I'm not connected with either the author or the publisher in case anyone was thinking that! There's more than enough info in this book to research an entire 17th C game, by the way. I believe the market is moving away from WWII and is now crying out for a detailed portrayal of 17th C European politi...

I hope AGEOD retains its identity during the merger. The engineering culture at AGEOD is quite different from Paradox. The AGEOD game models are, in a word, better. I also feel AGEOD's pricing strategy is superior both commercially and in terms of customer satisfaction.

Does this game cover scouting or logistics in anyway? I've a long-cherished dream of a game that enables you to hop on a horse and conduct a campaign from a 1st-person perspective.

Europe's Tragedy/Peter H Wilson

I'm reading this at the moment and must say it's been superb so far. Its relevance to the Seven Years' War is (um...), well nil I suppose seeing as its about the Thirty Years War. Anyone with an interest in European history is certain to love this book though, IMO. The wealth of information is immen...

Book: A visit to the Cities and Camps of the Confederate States

This is an interesting out-of-copyright book by one Fitzgerald Ross, a somewhat reactionary Austrian cavalryman of Irish descent, who visited the CSA during the war. On arrival in Richmond, he was given royal treatment -- including personal interviews with JP Benjamin and Jefferson Davis -- that can...

Forts remain one of the weaker bits of the game, IMO. Construction is too quick, the cost overall probably too low and the manpower employed in construction just disappears... This is something that needs attention for version 2. Using river or naval transports for fortress construction is just stra...

The manpower requirements of fort construction are prohibitive IMO -- 56 manpower gone forever in the construction effort. If you got the manpower back after construction was complete, forts would be much more worthwhile.

The AI is at least okay relative to other games, but there's certainly room for improvement. Some sort of strategic layer allowing the AI to pick different approaches according to the context would be nice. Dev diaries showcasing interesting or novel ai behaviours would be a big selling point. The b...

I had a stack with 2x Reckless commanders, the stack commander and a divisional commander. The corps' battle reports showed two 'reckless' icons, which made me wonder. I'd suggest switching off attrition in the naval boxes as well. The AI doesn't cycle its ships into port, so switching off attrition in the naval boxes helps it alot.

Recklessness

Hi all, Quick question: 1) If a subordinate commander is 'reckless', does he damage the retreat odds for his parent unit? I.e. does a reckless divisional commander hurt his parent corps' retreat odds or even those of his army or does this trait only hurt him when he's in charge of an independent com...

Historically, the Confederate approach to the war was similar to the Japanese approach to WW II: seize your objectives and fight until the enemy gives up. In each case this was a hope and not a strategy. It offered no route to victory that could be secured directly. It's not that it couldn't have wo...

Soloswolf, Clovis I acknowledge your points. Each is valid, though I'm not sure either decisive. From Houston to Richmond is around 1400 miles. From Saint Louis to New Orleans is around 600. An even greater factor than the dimensions of the area was the state of the communications at the time: unimp...

I would think the South's best chance would have been to adopt the same strategy Russia employed with such success for centuries: Skirmish, ambush and delay, giving battle at only the most opportune moments. Arm the population, retreat into the interior, and then counter-attack decisively once the N...

1) Loyalties in E Tennesse 2) Railroad/map error

Hi, 1) There were a great many mines in this area and the population was no more sympathetic to the Confederacy than that in West Virginia. Prior to the battle of Mill Springs/Logan's Cross, an entire brigade was tied down in this region trying (without great success) to suppress large bands of Unio...
