Luckily for the South, Davis didn't spar much with Robert E. Lee ;) It seems it didn't take much to get on Jefferson Davis' bad side. It only took a newspaper article in which Beauregard suggested that the Confederate army would be in Washington already if his original plan of attack before the Bull...

I've seen this subject covered in the first book of Shelby Foote's excellent Civil War trilogy: Fort Sumter to Perryville . (page 121) In the weeks after Bull Run, General Beauregard wanted to make a sudden thrust across the Potomac and divide the Union, east and west, by seizing the territory betwe...

I think it's the fact that its like the starter for the main course as regards the First World War. It's the first time that mass produced weaponry and supply allowed massive armies to be fielded. The deadliness of the weapons involved meant that defence easier than assault, and huge numbers of liv...

I still have the Avalon Hill version of the SPI game Frederick the Great . Other than spiffing up some of the map and counter colors they didn't change much as the game was a gem as is. I'd also love to see a game on this subject. Running around the map as the soldier-king trying to stave off one di...

Ageod maps

Graphically, I was curious as to how the maps in Ageod games like BOA and AACW are created. I'm assuming it starts as a very large flat art file that gets sliced into separate components or tiles so the game engine can display them more quickly.

In general 'pound' refers to the weight of the shot, so the higher the number the heavier the shot. However, official pounder designations were not always a reliable indication of actual projectile weight. Horse artillery refers to units where the artillerymen, loaders, etc. were mounted on their ho...

Is it possible for Russia in the game to bring a certain amount of pressure to bear on Turkey? The terrain in the Caucasus Mountains is lousy of course but a Russian offensive there did throw the Turks back quite a distance in 1915, before events elsewhere forced Russia to pull back their troops.

No politics on AGEOD's forums, thank you. Yes...I agree. Best to keep 'current' politics off the forum. I was always very fond of Avalon Hill's PanzerBlitz/PanzerLeader/Arab-Israeli War family of platoon and company level games. Strategic games usually have a tougher time keeping a large devoted audience over time. Usually because the audience isn't that large to begin with. But overall I don't think AACW is doing too badly. There are some forums over at Matrix that don't get a post for days or weeks.

If he is, at least he's got company to play with. Syd Barrett from the band's early days died a few years ago.
