Draft mod

I noticed some discussion earlier in this thread about a "draft mod" that would prevent either side from beginning conscription in 1861. I think this is a fine idea. Has this been incorporated in the v 1.10c of your mod? Or do I need to separately d/l the "draft mod.rar" file farther up? Thanks for ...

Huge Confederate armies -- the draft?

Playing as the Union, I'm noticing that the Confederate armies are _humongous_. I just fought a battle in August 1862 near Harper's Ferry where 115000 Rebs kicked butt on my 75000 Yankees. And they had another army down by Fredericksburg (don't know how big it is but intel reports that it has a stre...

Moving into field fortifications

If one unit has built fortifications in a region, and then a friendly unit moves into the area, can they take over or jointly occupy the field forts? Or do they have to start over again digging their own trenches? Is the answer to this any different if they arrive _during_ the battle through "marchi...

But I can't

When I try to change it to my own IP address, the fields won't take the proper number of digits. The first field, the one that is 71, can't have 3 digits. IP addresses on my LAN are in the format 192.168.x.xxx

IP Addresses

I'm trying to start up ARES on my home machine to run AACW over a LAN. In the space on the server startup screen for IP address it has an unusual IP address (71.182.71.177). When I try to change that to the actual IP address of my computer (192.168.1.100) I can't type three digits in the first field...

Good idea!

I like the idea of making the leader's abilities unknown to the player. You should have to judge from experience how lousy they are. At least they should be unknown until you send them into battle for the first time. I'm thinking of the old Civil War boardgame, I think it was by Victory Games, where...

Exactly what I was looking for!

Thanks, Pocus, that's what I needed. I'll try it out this weekend and if I have any questions I'll be sure to get back to you.

You should just include this with the game when you sell it. Or is it not quite ready to go?

More information please

So I found ARES, a freeware p2p file sharing program. The question is, how do you use it to set up a "connected mode" between two computers on a LAN. That is what I want to do -- have one player sit down at one computer, another at a second computer on the same LAN, and both give their orders at the...

Training officers should be able to take militia and run them all the way up to trained troops. It's silly to have them only able to affect half the process. What's the point? What are we simulating here?

Boats -- really needs an AI fix

Putting a gunboat in every river area works too, especially if you mod the number required down to one. But you have to keep rotating them. It's a pain in the ass, no doubt. I think the answer is to change the AI to make it less common. The Confederacy sent raiders into Union territory (that is, sta...

How does that work?

Does a Union replacement only provide 1/2 the strength points of a Confederate? Or do they cost twice as much?

Maybe it would be smart for the Union to just not buy any replacments and just pound out new units?

Replacements

This is sort of a historically-based question: is or should there be any political cost to using manpower for replacements instead of for raising new units? The reason I asked is that historically, the Union mostly refrained from replacing losses in existing units, preferring to raise new regiments,...

Training Officer

So how do training officers work? I've got Halleck sitting in Cairo with a ton of militia regiments under his command and I'm not noticing that any of them are turning into regulars. Is there some limit to the number you can train? Or do they have to do something -- like get into a fight?

Has anybody mentioned network games?

I have to admit I have no idea of how difficult this would be but it sure would be pleasant to be able to have a network game, both players working on their turns at the same time, then activate and have the execution visible to both players from their own perspective. I play ftf about half the time...

Confederate invasions

I'm still concerned about the other issue I raised that nobody seems to be addressing -- the way the Southern AI invades the North at the drop of a hat. Historically, the Confederacy didn't want to conquer the North and preferred to stand on the defensive most of the time. The AI should refrain from...

Western operations

Historically, the Confederacy did invade the southwest. They were defeated in a battle in New Mexico but had plans to go on to southern California. The issue of Confederate invasions of Oregon and such is a problem with the AI, not the map. The Confederates were waging an essentially defensive strug...

California - Southwest connection?

In v 1.10a it seems that California and the Southwest are not connected. You have to go by way of Rockies and it takes forever. I don't think this is correct. The US had plans before the Civil War to build a rail line across Arizona and New Mexico, though the actual first line was built through Utah...

Thanks, Rafiki, I'll make sure they are inside the city. What is the actual effect? Does it add some particular amount of companies a turn? Or a random amount per turn? Catton and McPherson

I taught American Civil War at the college level last year and I used McPherson as my text. It is probably the best one-volume treatment of the whole war and its context. It is supposed to cover the whole period 1840-1865 though, not just 1861-1865. It is part of a multi-volume history of the United...

Too many sieges

I have just begun playing this game but it seems to me that there are too many sieges. The default action for a force that is attacked in a region and is unable to defend it in an open field battle should be to run away to an adjacent area, not to retreat inside an unfortified town and dig in. The e...

In America the branch of the CoE is called the Episcopal Church. It was the religion of the majority of ruling-class Virginians at the time, so he wouldn't have had to hide it. Today, the Episcopal Church in the south is very low church and many are associated with the Church of Nigeria (!) rather t...
