Disable winter textures, make sure the zoom-in is at maximum level and perhaps reduce the max texture size, before running the turn again.

Even if the game engine is not the most recent, you should not get such a lag. On top of my head, you should scroll without any stack in selection, this will be faster. This can rarely happen and the bug, although known, is very rare and fixing it would require quite an overhaul of how interception or merging is done. It basically has to do with the recycling of an identifier and the game gets fooled.

Yes being out (if the structure is not hostile) or in does the same, to reduce MM.

It is possible to take hits even in a region with a structure if you use historical attrition + get very foul weather

In battles, you can only capture ships if they are transports indeed. If you take over an harbor with stranded ships, you can capture some of them, particularly if you are blockading the harbor. There is no boarding party feature in WON, sorry.

Sure, with a new engine and the data we amassed, that would be 'easier', but the task of redoing a game of the complexity of PON must be carefully accessed before writing even a single line of code.

An industrial era game? Sure, this is not impossible, but there is a long road to cover before that. We probably overstretched our human resources and engine with PON.
