I can't think of a single thing that strat rating does for a div commander as long as he's part of a corps.

Chaplain Lovejoy wrote:“Fixed fortifications are a monument to the stupidity of man” (George S. Patton)

Of course, that thought is based on 20th century experience that should not necessarily be projected back on 19th century reality!

Probably said that before he ran into Metz.

Interesting topic. Don't remember where I read it but I understood that the Augusta powder work's machinery and inventory was dismantled and moved as a result of Sherman's march and was only returned after the march route was determined. I don't know if it would have been 'there' if Augusta was take...

Jackson probably was worn out after the Valley campaign. He also wasn't nearly as familiar with the terrain around the Peninsula as he had been w/ the Valley and didn't take the proper steps to recon the area and roads through which he would have to attack (a mistake he didn't seem to repeat). Regar...

Great movie for period it covers him as a soldier. Agreed about the rest; however, due to the lack of anything else seeing the movie is worth it.

Certainly Hardee's pre-war experience plays a role in assigning him the trainer trait. Bragg always considered Hardee's corps the most disciplined of the AoT (prior to finding out what a backstabber Hardee was). Don't know if most disciplined means best trained, but it seems close enough. Of course ...

Voted for Greene as well. Imo 'best general' has to include a significant independent command. His career and Washington's are remarkably similar in terms of strategic ability and lack of battlefield success. You said it. Halleck ordered it back. He was under direct orders from the Commander in Chief and the President to move back to Washington. I respectfully disagree. Putting Pope's failure down to McClellan's inaction is historically bogus. McClellan was under orders to park himself in D.C. Lincoln took part of his command and gave it to Pope. Pope, outnumbering Lee, still failed miserably. He didn't just fail, he was beaten. McClellan ...

Pope's situation was far more fluid than Mac ever encountered. He had a hard enough time determining what troops were under his command, much less what Lee had. The circumstances of Pope's defeat were primarily due to Mac's own actions. His failure to either advance again from Harrison's landing or ...
