So far I've only played the Union. It's easier to start off and learn an unfamiliar game system with the 'safer' side. I've won three full campaigns on the standard difficulty setting, and there still seems to be plenty of alternate strategies to try, so I can't see myself getting bored with this ga...

One thing I disagree with is placing support units (engineer, signal, balloon, hospital, etc.) in a Div. If outside of the Div., they don't cost command points, and so ride for free, so to speak. Inside of a Div. structure, they are part of the command cost for the Div. (4 pts). They give their bonu...

Here's a link to Guns of August: http://www.matrixgames.com/games/game.asp?gid=331 A fun game. I've also played Imperialism II off and on for years now. It's one of those games that never really grows old. I still enjoy it from time to time. Today's strategy games are getting better all the time. So...

Having lots of corps available just isn't going to happen, but the other side can't do it either.
Concentrate your forces where you can & hit him hard before he can reinforce.

If you look closely at the reinforcement screen (builds), you will see that when you get the tooltip by hovering over the unit you want to build, it will show what is included in that brigade down at the bottom of the display. The big brigades have infantry, a cav, & an arty, while some have inf & m...

It is a wonderful game, and I do agree that the learning curve is pretty steep, but what I couldn't figure out on my own was asked & answered on this forum, so patience was all it took to start to get a good handle on the game. I too have waited many years for a decent PC Civil War game to emerge fr...

If the arty units are damaged, perhaps they'd be useful building a fort somewhere, rather than use good arty units. I must confess, however, as the Union player, I've not built any forts yet simply because by the time I had some crappy arty units to use, I had the CSA on the run and didn't need to b...

In my games Grant's come out on top until he ran into a heavily entrenched, almost equal strength forces.

Each battle is unique, though, so it's hard to tell what's happening, & why he's causing you so many casualties.

I believe Grant's starting stats are 5-5-4, while Lee has at least a 6 defensive stat. Combine this with heavily entrenched forces, and you will take quite a few casualties as the attcking Union player. With this type of warfare, there's really no choice. Comparing Grant's total casualties with thos...

New York is the cheapest in terms of morale lost at 50, Philly is an option, I forget what the rest are. Fort Laramie is not on the player's relocation list!

Of course, these are available to the player, no idea what tha AI can do with relocation.

If the trait specifies "if the commander" or such, then the trait only comes into effect when he is the leader of the stack, not just an auxiliary there to lend command points.

As the Union, I've never gotten as much as 240 Money & War Supply per turn from the transports, even adding both together. I think the most I got was around 90. I always build all of my available transports by 1862, & their income generated is a moderate percentage of the total per turn capital. The...

Having the supplies & ammo ready, and getting them where they need to be are two very different things. I've frequently had troops unsupplied in bad weather one or two regions from a depot as the Union. Tying up rail capacity shuttling troops is the main culprit, as far as I can determine, but dista...

I think the system works fine.
A result is desired, so certain limitations or consequences are built in.
It's just another way around actually trying to use a poor commander for combat duties.

I haven't done it either.

Each time either the besieged force is too small to have effect, or the approaching relief force scares off the rebs while they're still a couple of areas away.

There is a button that will allow a sally with all of your troops in the structure.
Top left of the button area, if I remember correctly.
They will probably end up outside at the turn end if successful, though.

As a side note, is there any disadvantage to giving these weak leaders their army commands, but not assigning any units to said armies? That way there's no national penalty when giving a better leader a new army command, since the bad ones already have a command, it's just that the command will be i...

When you capture a town, whether garrisoned or not, you also capture a measure of supply as well. This forces you to spend resources garrisoning towns, and part...

Most of the bad generals still have useful special abilities, so throwing them away is a huge waste of resources, particularly the 'recruiting officer' trait!

Put that guy in a large city, he'll give you more manpower, something both sides desperately need.

With two generals in a stack, one is actiated, the other is not, they can still fight together as a stack if the active general is senior. If one is going to try this, it would be wise to do it before assigning a command (IE: army HQ) to this general.
If he's not in command of anything but a militia unit, then there shouldn't be much of a problem if he 'goes west'.

Most games do this in some way, the addition of replacements are 'diluting' the experience of the unit as a whole.

It's more expensive to put together the Div this way, but when you want to send one off from a corps for a side mission it gives you more Divs to select from.

You probably don't need all Divs to be this way, perhaps 1/2 or 2/3.
I'm still learning the subleties of the game (there are plenty!).

Something that would be a nice addition (no idea how implementable, however) would be to provide a map overlay via the left hand buttons (control, supply, allegiance, etc) that shows where breaks exist in the rail network. It's very easy to overlook areas if you don't scroll across the entire map car...
