In my games, Grant seems to be like Napoleon. The enemy generals avoid him. So, I create a nice army and he hardly fights. Gets slowed down more by supply issues than anything else.

In real life Grant was quite the butcher, so it makes sense. For instance it can be argued that Grant lost every major engagement with Lee up until Petersburg. In fact, at Cold Harbor Virginia in June of 1864 Grant ordered an assault on fortified Confederate positions that led to 12 to 13,000 casua...

Unfortunately I am into Game 2. rev 1.09. In the Summer/Autumn 1862 I managed to take Richmond, Nashville, Memphis on 3 consecutive turns. That put me up to 145NM, but the CSA was only reduced to 80NM. I have even refrained from replacing Generals. The only hit I have taken on that front was promoti...

Knoxville

I was looking over the objective cities and I noted that Knoxville is not an objective city. I find this very odd considering how many times Lincoln ordered his Armies to take Knoxville and the determental effect not taking the place had on the careers of more than one Union General. I also noted th...

The question is, do you want to game the system? I would rather have the system fixed. I don't imagine the algorithm for adjusting seniority could be that difficult to adjust.

Combat stats is not the same thing as being FIRED. A generals combat stats have very little to do with the ability to promote / demote him. Seniority is the only stat that really counts. If you wish to examine Rosecrans, he held a series of posts, and small army like commands before being promoted t...

I think one of the problems in the game is that Generals are not penalized enough for not doing well. How many opportunities did McClellan, Pope, Buell, Rosecrans, Hooker, even Thomas actually have. Not many. Most of them were out on their ear the moment they faltered. If Thomas had not actually bee...

So many good books, so little time. I agree with all the recommendations. All I can say, is that if you know very little about the war, and want to come up to speed in 500 pages or less, than the McPherson is the best 1 volume history out there. If you have the time to read Foote, then you probably ...

I like the idea of hiding the actual commander ratings from the player. Give the general a reputation - starting with their pre-war rep, and moving up/down based on results. So Little mac and Halleck would start with good reps, but not necessarily have good performance. The more you fight with the g...

I want to say I am about 30-40 pts below the level need to win, and the cornfeds are about the same above what is needed to lose.

Is it possible that the rebs will relocate their capitol to a place other than an objective city? I would hate to have to chase down every last city in the game.

What does it take to win the game? I have captured every objective city in the south yet the computer fights on. I have over 1000 vp more than the computer, but the enemies morale has not broken. I suspect the cause of my improvement was parking a transport in the port I wanted supply forwarded to. I can't definitively state that this is it, because of all the other activity I have been doing. Possibilities are: 1. Parking a transport in the port 2. Having a transport arrive from a port with...

164. Hard to say how things are going. I have managed to take Charleston, and Savanah. Plus I now keep a group of transports shuttling back and forth from the north to my army there. My division grew into a corp, then two and an army. My supply situation is improved, but I can't pinpoint the cause.

#3 is not gamey either. There were several instances on both sides where high-ranking but somewhat inept Generals were reassigned to never-never land. General Pope to the Indian frontiers is just one example. Pope was not as inept as is sometimes assumed on this board. You should really read Cozzen...

I've noted that in the Roster, Generals that can be promoted NOW are highlighted in red. While i commend Ageod on promotion and penalties, some of the penalties are way out of line. I don't beleive that promoting a 1star to a 2star should incur the kind of penalties that I have seen. Even 2-3star sh...

Depots and Supply

I thought that to get supply to a location all you need was a depot connected by either another depot, rail, or naval. I have captured Georgetown SC, built a depot there, but I have noticed that it is not gathering supply, and that my units there are losing supply. What do you need to do to get supp...

I understand the limits of what can be represented in game terms. I agree gunboats should not be doing Iwo. On the other hand, I can't help but wish for a greater role for the Naval Service. If you do an amphibious attack do the Naval Units count toward the battle? Perhaps some benefit to your attac...

If you are only going to read 1 book, I would read McPherson. Definitely puts the war in context. For an excellent history that was ground breaking in its day, I suggest T.Harry Willams Lincoln and his Generals. I also have liked the Bruce Catton books. There are also the campanion books - How the N...

Use your ironclads to fight enemy ships. Wooden gunboats are most useful in my opinion to blockade rivers for the purpose of blocking the movements of enemy land forces. Do not use ironclads or ships to bombard a fort. The fort will get all the best of it. Land forces must take the forts to clear t...

An interesting idea is to look at early war 'Armies' and see them pretty much as corps. Early war theatres are pretty much 'Armies'. Naval operations is one area I have not yet tackled in the 101 thread. For now, here are a few tips. One ship is one element. In my opinion the brown water blockade is not worth your time, because the Confederacy can still get all the war supplies they need, and the blockade requirements are very h...
