denisoh: My study of the ACW indicates that the army often moved on different axes by division/corps. A good example would be Sherman's army moving through Ga. They just did not move in a long column along a single road except where absolutely necessary. Let the the Nazis move one of their uber tan...

I think Sherman was wrong - cruelty never finishes a war more quickly - it only stiffens the resolve of the other side to fight on. I am trying to think of a war from my own reading on the history of warfare where any side finished a war more quickly by being more cruel in its actions. It is perhap...

Of course that formation does not apply to the British, as they tended to deploy in line rather than column. (Sharpes' DVD ftw :niark: )

Well, we're off, nothing to report as of yet, No bonds this year, so a non bounty call for volunteers went out, and we raised graduated taxes(0%). Harpers held for the Union, Sumter and Norfolk fell. this is a difficult issue to tackle. We had an idea some time ago, where a given harbor would have an additional list of sea regions allowing it to be blockaded (even if the sea regions are not adjacent as you can guess). But to which extent we do that? Should we blockade Viksburg because the Missi...

1) x = 3? However, I'd like to lift that restriction on early january 63, at least for any force commanded directly or indirectly (subordinate corps) by Grant and from early 64 on for any commanded by Sherman or Sheridan, too. Sounds good 2) Agreed, but I would say until late De...

1) Units are required to maintain an x area suppy trace to the nearest depot. (x=?) 2) Volunteers may be called from the start of game, through the end of 1863 (or 4). All levels of bounty may be used, but once used that bounty is as low as you can go. (i.e. once you offer $x for volunteers, $x is t...

With 1.07 being pretty much out, we need to actually come up with our rules. I agree with Henry on areas that need covered, so we should use that as the basis for our game. 1) Units are required to maintain an x area suppy trace to the nearest depot. (x=?) 2) Volunteers may be called from the start ...

The "On to Richmond" event is not a gimmick. It accurately represents the enormous political pressure the Northern press put on Lincoln to begin an offensive. The fact that it is all but impossible doesn't detract from its historical accuracy. BTW, after Bull Run many of these same papers turned ab...

Something along those lines, Henry has some ideas I'm sure. I was also intending on limiting the amount of money in the game, either through a graduated (0 inflation options in 61, 1 in 62 etc), or some other method to be decided. All of this will hurt me (the assumed Confederates, Henry does like h...

Sure, and for the most part you are right. But in the mostly unregulated enviroment of our first couple games, the Union was moving too far, too fast for either of our comfort. What corps? Historically there were no confederate troops to oppose the union landings in SC for months afterwards. In game, since the whole point is to avoid huge ahistorical builds, I would expect a secesh player to be in a similar situation. I will admit I did not spend anywhere near as much on b...

The Real Civil War

Pun intended. :fleb: Henry and I are going to start a new game when 1.07 comes out with a new set of quite restrictive house rules. After three games through mid 1862, we both noticed that the game did not 'feel' like the civil war. Thus we agreed to try an AAR game, with new rules specifically desi...

Take the War of 1812, where the American forces were routed time and time again by numerically inferior British professionals who VERY rarely broke, even facing horrendous casualties. Green troops tended to break on...

Something needs to be looked at though. There was nothing to stop Dupont and T.W. Only 2 union amphibious operations were intended to advance beyond the immediate lodgement a...
