I definitely agree with this, but I guess this is a larger issue. I don't think AI's are generally very good at planning long-term strategies like that.

I'm not the expert, but I would say at least in my experience the activation rule is by far the biggest hindrance to the AI. The difference between it being on and off is like night and day when the AI is playing as the Union.

I noticed that also - the AI moved Grant to the east sometime during the winter between 1862 and 1863. I'm just about to start into the campaign season of '63, and it looks like the AI has used the winter months to really build up some heavy-hitters to come after me. Pretty exciting!

I tried setting the options to the following: Low aggressiveness Small FOW bonus No activation check This made a huge difference with the Union AI, as others have already reported. I think this is most likely because of the activation rule being off. This is honestly the first game I've played where...

That is astonishing, considering that you have it set to low aggressiveness. I'll have to try that myself - I can't imagine why changing that setting would have such a profound effect on the AI.

I envy you Nial, because I have never seen anything like this. I think above somebody mentioned that the AI was being strange only in the April '61 scenario, but I get this in the 1862 scenario as well. I've never played the later-year scenarios, but by 1862 the Union AI should be attacking. I've on...

I agree that this has been discussed before, time and time again. I would also agree that we can't expect the world of the AI, because it's not easy to create a good one. We expect the AI to act just like the Lincoln government would in real life, which is obviously unrealistic. But I would venture ...

I've had similar experiences with both sides. As the CSA, the Union AI can be really puzzling. In the east, it hardly ever does anything - usually it just shifts units back and forth between Washington and Harper's Ferry. In the west, usually it holds back also - except with Grant. In my recent game...

Somehow it seems to happen to me more frequently than it used to (maybe with recent patches). Yesterday, as the CSA, I had A.S. Johston's army and 4 corps move against Fort Henry. There was a decent-sized Union contingent there so I left everyone's posture to 'defensive', so they could settle into a...

Posture Changes

Fairly frequently, the game will change my units' posture settings, often with disastrous results. This is most noticeable with cavalry units I have set to a passive posture. When the turn is being resolved, their posture changes to "aggressive", and they usually get slaughtered when encountering a ...

Actually I don't even think you need all four of the ones you mentioned to do it. I did it as the Union with capturing Memphis and Richmond (along with all the other things north of those cities, Forts Henry & Donelson, Fredericksburg, etc.) in 1862.

I have to agree with Adam. I don't know much about the inner workings of the combat system and I don't have any proof either, but I do see some wild combat loss ratios in this game. I think lowering the hit coefficient alleviated the problem of losing massive numbers of forces in a lopsided defeat, ...

No offense intended to anyone here, but why does it seem like every thread posted on this forum degenerates into a historical debate? I wasn't really asking about the historical reasons why the Union didn't build many armored frigates - just curious why they disappeared from my reinforcements screen...

Okay - I'll try this with the river ironclads. For some reason I think I already had tried - looking at the map, the Erie canal isn't a "navigable river" all the way up to the top.

Armored Frigates

After the new patch (1.06), armored frigates have been removed from my reinforcements screen (playing as the Union). I've only built 3 or 4 of these, so I don't think I've exhausted my force pool...anyone else experienced this?

Actually, this doesn't work for me. If I try to send a boat to an East Coast port from Lake Michigan, it simply won't go - which makes sense to me at least in terms of the map itself. There isn't any clear waterway (on the map) that runs from Lake Michigan to the east coast, much less the Mississipp...

Yes, he will be released sometime around July 1862 (could be a little earlier or later than this, I can't remember exactly). But I agree - I was mislead by this the first time I saw it also, and posted something on this forum much like yours. I think this is one example of a pervasive theme in the g...

River Boats

I can't seem to get around this annoying problem: I order a new river ironclad (or gunboat, or whatever) from a state such as Illinois, and then it gets built in Chicago on the shores of Lake Michigan, rendering it all but useless. Obviously the easy workaround is to build boats in border states lik...

Union Generals Locked in April '61 Campaign

I've nearly reached October 1861, and after McClellan was unlocked, it seemed that in inordinate amount of my generals were 'unable to perform offensive actions'. This included McDowell and a large majority of my other leaders in the East, as well as some in the West. I replaced McDowell with McClel...

On the "wargames" department... From paradox, EU II is still my favorite and HOI2 DD it's also very good. But the AI is weak on both. Cheers! AI was weak on EU III also (at least in version 1.2). As Brandenburg/Germany, I conquered all of Europe without ever declaring war on anyone, because weak na...

For some reason I never really like Civilization - seemed almost too formulaic or oversimplified to me. It's not really very "historical" - you can have multiple civilizations from different eras and locations on the board at the same time. It just seemed like a big game of Command & Conquer, except...

I'm looking for good grand strategy/empire-building games/wargames...I realize this is a broad topic, but I'm not really looking for any specific era/time period. I'm just looking for something with reasonably good graphics (games like AACW and Europa Universalis are about on par with what I would c...
