Re: Suicide of Bad Generals

8< Only problem is you can't make them a Corps leader or an army leader. 8< What are you talking about? There are no restrictions or penalties for making anyone a Corps commander, regardless of seniority. The leader must simply be Maj.Gen. or higher. Maybe because they are one star when they arrive...

Re: Suicide of Bad Generals

See here's the problem on the wait and level up a general strategy. In 1862 you have already fought a full year using a bunch of 3-1-1's. Then as 1862 goes by you get some really nice generals. Only problem is you can't make them a Corps leader or an army leader. You first have some rubes that have ...

Re: Suicide of Bad Generals

No. What's a siege. I just described in detail when a siege exists. In Siege Combat, very basically, the offensive artillery value of the besieging forces is compared to the defensive artillery value of the besieged forces. The better the offensive value vs defensive value, the more likely to score...

Key word is eventually. I was trying to find a very quick solution that would take one or at most two turns.

Re: Some rule/mechanics questions from early play.

1. You are never really making a mistake when you buy replacements. If not used they still stay in the pool for future use. And you are correct that the AI might not build enough of them to cover heavy losses. 9. You really can't block that movement. The best you can do is inflict hits on their tran...

Re: Suicide of Bad Generals

Darn. Another good idea that most likely can't be done. Yet in a single game playing as CSA I had both Forrest and Longstreet killed in battles. But considering how many times I destroyed the AI's single stack with a general and having the general not have a red slash through him my losses were just...

What happens if I click the surrender icon that tells the stack to surrender? What happens to the general? I may have to experiment with that one.

Re: Battle Planner Tutorial or Documentation

Thanks for the advice. I'll have to pay attention to the colors and basically pick a deployment and battle plan that isn't red or maybe red for one of the three enemy options.

Re: Blocking river crossing

Fist off, in game-terms, you are not blockading. You can blockade an enemy harbor. You're making me guess at your results from what little information you've provided. You did not provide a Save, nor state what the battle outcome of the combat was, only that the other side continued its move. How? ...

Suicide of Bad Generals

So I want to promote a general that has some really good stats to be an army commander. I have two problems. This first is that he has other in from of him with more seniority and it would cost too much NM and VP's to do it. The second is the limited number of army commands. Basically there are two ...

Re: Battle Planner Tutorial or Documentation

It would still be nice to read what plans are supposed to be better against other plans. It's like playing rock, paper scissors without knowing which beats which. When should you do a withdrawal vs. a mass attack and should you go left heavy or equal etc.

Re: Blocking river crossing

You lost the naval battle. The winning fleet continued on it way. How can you lose a naval battle when one side had 5 gunboats and the other side has just transports carrying a brigade? I think I did lose this as my fleet was in defensive posture at the next turn. But if lost it was that my fleet g...

Re: Promotions Can They Change Stats or Traits?

I admit I have never played with random leaders. Heck, I've only actually finished two campaign games so far. But I thought random meant that the same perc4entages and types show up except for different guys. So there is a Longstreet except it might be one of the 3-1-1's in the pool. Otherwise I agr...

Battle Planner Tutorial or Documentation

I have not used the battle planner. The games manual doesn't really get into much detail about it. Is there a post/thread file that explains all the various plans and what the various formations mean? I see what the AI is proposing but wonder why that is a good option against what the other side has.

Re: Blocking river crossing

If true that a stack can only inflict 50 max hit points of damage then it would make more sense to create two or three smaller groups than to combine into one large stack. Of course this can put you at a disadvantage in a pure ship to ship fight.

Re: Promotions Can They Change Stats or Traits?

How it works for me is to not promote if the results are worse. I'm playing the hand that I know what is right and what decisions make it worse. As you said the CSA is already the underdog so why make things worse.

A purist should use random generals.

Re: Promotions Can They Change Stats or Traits?

Not promoting a general because you know he gets worse is no different than many other things you learn from the game. How is it OK to pre-position some troops of ships because you KNOW the AI will do X vs it not OK to not promote? For example many people playing CSA buys a few conscript units becau...

Re: Blocking river crossing

I've had gunboats on orange/orange and they didn't block the other side from moving past using transport. I'm not referring to moving from one land region across the river to another but instead pure naval transport on the river. Combat did take place but the surviving units still proceeded to move ...

Re: Promotions Can They Change Stats or Traits?

Yes that is true. But at the end of the day this is a game and a game that has results predetermined. So after either reading about the promotions or playing a game you know what to expect. So that means you won't be promoting some great generals because you don't want to lose those stats and traits...

Re: Promotions Can They Change Stats or Traits?

Well promoting from someone doing SQL or coding to a management position is only the first promotion. So your analogy only fits a small part of the possible promotion scenarios. Once you go to say PM, then manager, then senior manager, director, VP these are no longer based on technical knowledge. Y...

Difficulty Settings

There are many settings to help the AI but I have a strong suspicion that some can actually hurt the AI. For example giving the AI the capability to see at an extended range appears to cause the union AI to send raids very deep into CSA territory though the mountains of WV, Kentucky and Tennessee. A...

Re: Promotions Can They Change Stats or Traits?

So I decided to promote a bunch of CSA generals and UGH was I in for a shock. I really found out the hard way on the 6 guys I promoted. Not a single one got better and 5 of the 6 got worse. Not just the stats but even the traits got worse or some good ones disappeared. And to compound things it appe...

Promotions Can They Change Stats or Traits?

First off apologies if this was already answered. Say I have a 5-3-4 one star division commander and he can be p...

As CSA Should I Build 1 set of IW's or 2 and When

I did a search and read many posts on CSA building iron works. I'm wondering what the best strategy is when playing against the AI vs. a PBEM game. From my search it appears that when playing against the AI you should only build 1 set of IW's in 1861 as you capture more than enough rifles for your n...

Re: Cavalry and Stack Question

Here's what I don't understand. What can you do with Shelby in KY/TN before October 61? So for June to late September what is the opportunity cost to using him in MO? I do see your potential point about the Union taking Springfield and then wasting troops trying to go for Arkansas. However the Union...

Re: Cavalry and Stack Question

Just some clarification. The reason I mentioned Shelby destroying stockades and small town was because the AI would go after Fayetteville in 62. I don't see much need for Shelby in TN in 61 so I thought I could destroy the union supply chain just west and north of Springfield. Once Springfield is se...

What if You Had No Replacements For Light Artillery

Here's an interesting question. I'm managing all my replacement chits. So say I never buy any for light artillery. Now I have a mixed brigade like one of the CSA 200 strength Virginia brigades that have a 6 pounder artillery element. Over time due to movement or fighting the 6 pound artillery elemen...
