Playing the CSA

Hello all, I've always played the North in this game for a couple of reasons: first, I think Athena is better as the CSA; and second, I enjoy the huge effort involved in orchestrating all the Union's offensives, which I find quite challenging, even though the North has way more resources and populat...

How do you decide that a stack is in "reserve"? I've never done that before.

This just started happening to me, for the first time ever. The turn will not cycle to completion, just sends me back to main menu. I quit and restarted my computer, but it still occurred. Does that mean I need to start a new game from scratch?

Thanks for the replies. I think it's because I haven't added any transports at all, just the extra merchant ships that come with the option. Also, the Atlantic fleet is transporting less and less supplies per turn (down to around 800 or so per turn now, in mid-63). So is the lesson here that one sho...

Union shipping

I've posted on this subject before, and was convinced that I had missed something or that I was losing it. Anyway, I've confirmed it now, and I think it's escaped detection because the vast majority of Union players don't watch their income closely. It's this: Starting at some point in the game, Uni...

Got it, thanks for the replies. My principle confusion was whether or not all the guns in an arty "division" would have a chance of actually engaging an enemy. I guess the answer is yes, which means I have a lot of reshuffling to do!

artillery divs

I've been seeing posts alluding to artillery divisions, and want to know more. Weren't such things pointless in the original AACW? If they work now, what's the mechanic that allows them? They seem unrealistic to me. Also, does this mean that the usual 4 or so art units per division not make sense? I...

Stretches of the Overland Campaign, in particular Spotsylvania, provide an example of turn-length engagement... but Spotsylvania could also be argued to be the exception which proves the rule that this did not happen regularly during the Civil War. The +1 MC control per element killed does seem har...

Somehow, this has all become very convoluted! (©Captain Obvious) Wouldn't the basics be something like- 1. (keeping old rule) If attempting to move into a region where you have less than 5% control, you must attack. 2. If you win, you gain at least 50% control based on winning itself. 3. If you win...

I'm a bit confused by he 5% MC issue. To be clear, is this new to the beta patch, or has it always been there? Is it fixing a previous issue, or was it nerfed and needed fixing? I got lost during the course of the conversation.

I don't think Orso meant to offend you; he said he was happy to help you get things running. WinRar is a good free unzipping/archiving program. Regardless of the word "public" being in the description, it is not a declaration that everything will be setup for ease of access as with the official patches. One must understand the context of the situation. The word 'public' means that the general public is welcome to test the patch and not tha...

I've noticed the same thing, just for the record. Very, very quiet CSA Athena. Doing almost nothing, even with settings I've used for many games before when she ends up invading PA and Ohio!

Union merchant shipping?

Hello, Since playing the latest patch, 1.04, I've noticed something strange: Union shipping hasn't earned anything at all in a very long while. It's June 62, and the last time I saw money or war supply from my shipping was almost a year ago. I haven't moved my merchant ships from the merchant lanes ...

The only thing IRL that stopped the German High Seas Fleet from creating havoc with the Royal Navy and her allies was the Kaiser's reluctance to send his ships into harm's way. World War One Gold had a way of modeling this; I don't know if TEAW does, but if it doesn't, the war at sea could look radi...

You are correct - Main Army and GHQ are different things. 1. GHQ: Each nation has only one GHQ (except Germany, which has two - East and West). GHQ serves several functions, mostly importantly providing reserve units for other HQs within its command radius. 2. Main Army: The Main Army concept is re...

Newbie fires a flare

Hello, As a newcomer to this intensely complicated game, I thought I'd introduce myself by way of posting stupid questions. Here's the first: Am I correct in assuming that there's a difference between a front's "main army" and GHQ? If so, how do I locate my GHQ on the map? I'm a bit confused by this.

Hello! I have noticed that the descriptions for unit bonuses have in many cases changed somewhat in ACW2. For example, the amphibious bonus granted by marines has changed from "stack" to "unit." Are they the same? Do my marines still grant the same river crossing benefits to the whole STACK they're ...

Yeah, even though Forge has a tactical element, it has much more of a micro-management problem than this game has. I never found this game to be overwhelming in that regard, but I have a good grasp on American geography and never had problems with remembering where units were. Forge is a game with ...
